Sometimes it's nice to do the same things again and again like eat favorite meals, spend time with loved ones, visit special places, and honor traditions. But other times, a new twist on an old favorite helps you appreciate it even more. Could that be true of an experience of West Virginia's beloved New River Gorge Bridge? We think so!
Looking across the way at the New River Gorge Bridge is one thing.
Standing underneath it, centered between two massive steel girders anchored in huge columns of concrete, is quite another.
If you've spent plenty of time appreciating this view of this West Virginia icon (which, we readily acknowledge, is one that will never grow old)...
...maybe it's time to try this one, instead. Hiking to the base of the bridge's massive steel support structures will give you a whole new appreciation for - and understanding of - the grandeur of the longest single-span arched bridge in America.
One way to reach the base of the New River Gorge Bridge is via the Bridge Trail. Another way is via the Fayette Trail. Combine the two for an especially epic hike that passes directly under the New River Gorge Bridge between Fayette Station Road and Kaymoor.
It's a bit steep in places, but aren't all of the best adventures? And while fall, winter, and spring afford the best views of the bridge, you'll get some good glimpses through the foliage even in the summer.
To learn more about how to access this unique perspective of such a familiar sight, check the trail route map on Alltrails. Is this a hike you've taken before? Another option with a more traditional view that is well worth your time and attention is Long Point Trail. What other trails have you found that offer great views of the New River Gorge Bridge?
