There is plenty to see and do outdoors in Wild & Wonderful West Virginia. Let’s take a look at 10 epic outdoorsy things anyone can do in the mountain state.
During these uncertain times, please keep safety in mind and consider adding destinations to your bucket list to visit at a later date.
1. Have a picnic
There is something special about eating out in the great outdoors. Pack a picnic lunch and go to your favorite spot along a river or visit one of West Virginia’s beautiful state parks and picnic there. Breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors!
2. Go Fishing
West Virginia has some of the best fishing spots in the United States. Grab your poles and the kids and hit a nearby trout stream or lake. There is nothing like a child’s excitement when they reel in the big one!
West Virginia has some truly thrilling zip lines. The state’s best zip line takes you high above the New River Gorge. The gorge’s open air zip line soars 200 feet above the ground and zig zags for 1.5 miles.
Put a kayak in the water and paddle your way down one of West Virginia’s beautiful rivers.
5. Horseback Riding
Horseback riding down West Virginia trails is a true adventure! Some the state’s most scenic trails offer visitors the chance to view them on horseback.
West Virginia offers several beautiful and testing golf courses. So grab your clubs and have a swinging good time.

West Virginia’s state parks and forests offer many beautiful trails to enjoy. If you can’t get to a state park, then take a quiet walk in the woods.
8. Go Camping
There is nothing like putting up a tent and sleeping under the stars. Don’t forget the S’mores!
Rev up a four wheeler and find a good ol' dirt road. It is even more fun to hit a rutted dirt road after a heavy rain.
