If you're looking for an underrated campground with plenty of activities for the kiddos in the family, then look no further than Camp Creek State Park just outside of Charleston in Camp Creek. The 550-acre park is small, yet filled with outdoor fun - including two waterfalls perfect for dipping your toes into or swimming in the waters of a cool mountain creek.
In total, there are four camping areas in this small but mighty state park.
Each is only a short walk from the other but they all offer a different sort of camping experience. Mash Fork is probably the most versatile and offers both trailer and tent sites; some have hookups and others don't.
The campgrounds at Camp Creek all offer picturesque scenery any time of the year...
But if you go in the summertime, you'll be especially pleased by the two waterfalls in the park.
Campbell Falls is located just a short walk from the road and is a favorite among campers for swimming and combating soaring summertime temperatures in the Mountain State.
The park's many other features make it a perfect spot for a day visit as well.
From biking to fishing, horseback riding, and hiking, this underappreciated state park has much to see and do, whether you stay for the day, the night, or longer.
Another waterfall (Mash Fork Falls) is accessible by either taking a hike through the woods or simply driving your car down an access road near the entrance to Mash Fork Campground within the state park.
Bring a towel and a picnic lunch and spend the day by (and in!) the water before heading back to camp for a sunset dinner around the campfire.
