Today, more than ever, we are becoming increasingly more health conscious. We are intentional about what we eat and incorporate exercise and healthy habits into our daily lives. The internet is full of products and solutions promoting health and wellness. But did you know there is an all-natural lake that some say boasts healing properties and health benefits far better than anything you can buy from a store? In the tiny town of the same name, nestled in the Columbia River Plateau, Soap Lake has been drawing visitors to its mineral-rich waters for more than 100 years. Highly regarded for its high mineral content, Soap Lake has one of the highest mineral contents in the world and has been enticing people who flock to the area to experience the lake's healing powers.
Aptly chosen, the name Soap Lake comes from the Native American name Smokiam, which means "healing waters". People return to the area year after year to bathe in the waters and take advantage of its healing properties.
Peaceful serenity awaits on the shores of Soap Lake, located between Seattle and Spokane.
The 2-square mile area of Soap Lake was formed by the Missoula Floods at the base of Grand Coulee. It is a meromictic soda lake, abundant in minerals, resulting in a naturally occurring foam and a soapy appearance and feel.
Often referred to as, "Washington's Health Resort", Soap Lake is rich in 23 minerals, and additional healing substances called ichthysols, known to treat skin disorders.
The high mineral content of the lake makes the water quite buoyant. It is said that while visiting Soap Lake, rival native tribes would call a truce so they could all experience the medicinal, healing effects for their tribe members and animals.
In the early 1900s, Soap Lake was home to a large sanatorium (what we now call a health spa) and people from all over made the trek to its shores in the hopes of healing their various ailments. Today, people still swear by the healing powers of the lake, and the sulfur-rich, black mud used as a body mask to soothe aches and pains.
"Calling the Healing Waters" is a magnificent sculpture and sundial overlooking the lake. The sculpture depicts Father Sky and Mother Earth in the form of a young, Native American Couple, honoring Soap Lake's healing properties.
Whether you come for the health benefits of the lake or just to take in the natural beauty of the landscape, Soap Lake is the perfect tranquil setting to relax and unwind.
