Washingtonians know how fortunate we are to be surrounded by abundant natural beauty. The Evergreen State is teeming with lush nature trails and vast forested parks to explore to our heart's desire. But, nature lovers take note. There is a new state park in Washington and it's the perfect destination to get away from it all.
In partnership with the Washington State Parks Commission and the Nisqually Indian Tribe, Nisqually State Park was developed on 1,200 acres of expansive prairie and verdant forest.
Located off Highway 7 and just a few miles west of Eatonville, in the foothills of Mount Rainier, Nisqually State Park is nestled in a picturesque setting between the Mashel and Nisqually Rivers and the Ohop Valley.
Phase one of the park is currently day-use only and a Discover Pass is required.
Keep in mind that while the park is in development for phase two, some areas may be inaccessible. Phase two development is slated to include additional recreation and expanded trails.
Generally considered a moderately challenging hike, the Mashel River Trail will take you on a 6.9-mile loop through forested trails and riverside paths.
Of course, if you're looking for a shorter hike, check out the Mashel Prairie Trail. This 2.5-mile out-and-back trail has a 321-foot elevation gain and is open year-round. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Wander under a canopy of tall trees and take in the natural beauty surrounding you.
Although the park is well maintained, you should be prepared for changing weather conditions and muddy pathways.
Whether hiking, mountain biking, or riding horseback, the views at Nisqually State Park are incredible.
In fact, we can't think of a more refreshing way to spend the day.
While you might not have heard of it, Washington's newest state park is undeniably worth a visit. Remember, you'll need to purchase a Discover Pass to enter Nisqually State Park and you can buy one in advance on the Washington State Parks website.
Have you spent the day at Nisqually State Park? We'd love to hear about your experience in the comments.
