If you've ever visited the San Juan Islands, you're probably familiar with names like Lopez Island, Orcas Island, and San Juan Island's most popular town, Friday Harbor. But did you know there are actually a whopping 172 named islands and reefs in San Juan County?
Most of the 172 islands don't have ferry service, and many are completely unpopulated. This is where you'll find some of the most rugged territory in the northwest, including the beautiful but secluded James Island. Visiting this enchanting spot will allow you to completely unplug (mainly because there's no WiFi or cell service).
James Island lies in Rosario Strait just off the eastern shore of Decatur Island and three miles west of the city of Anacortes.
The island has a land area of 113 acres with 12,335 feet of saltwater shoreline.
James Island Marine State Park encompasses the entire island.
James Island was transferred from the federal government to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission in 1964.
Here's the catch: you can only access this place via private boat.
The island has four mooring buoys in the East Cove. People also love to kayak in from Anacortes.
Get out and stretch your legs, because you'll want to enjoy a quiet hike.
The trails only cover a couple of miles, but that's all your'll need. You'll trek through pristine forests toward the most stunning views.
Speaking of views... if you explore this island on a clear day, you're in for a treat.
These are some of the best views of the sea you'll find anywhere.
Between the emerald coves, forested trails, spectacular views, and the lack of ferry access, this just might be your dream vacation spot when you need to get away from it all.
There are just 13 primitive campsites here, so you'll never be competing with your neighbors. There's no potable water, so keep that in mind.
If you have a boat (or access to one), you owe it to yourself to see this place in person.
You won't believe you're still in Washington.
Have you ever visited any of the lesser-known islands of San Juan County?
