You might not be surprised to learn that Virginia is quickly becoming one of the South’s newest destinations for barbecue. You can find delicious BBQ in nearly every part of the state and in the most unlikely of buildings (for example, this BBQ restaurant inside a truck stop). Today, we’ll introduce you to one of the state’s newest and most popular spots, ZZQ. This spot offers authentic, Texas-style barbecue in Richmond, Virginia and it’s all the rage. The food is so popular, in fact, that the shop closes down when it runs out of ingredients, which it often does during weekends. So don’t be afraid to get there early and wait in line, because the food will be well worth it.
In the Scott’s Addition neighborhood of Richmond, It’s not hard to come across a fan of ZZQ barbecue who has waited hours for a meal inside this newest addition to Richmond’s BBQ scene.
After years of operating a food truck, two Texas natives headed to Richmond to open up shop in one of the most trendy neighborhoods of Richmond. The self-proclaimed "best BBQ outside of Texas" restaurant delivers on its promise in a big way.
Step inside and you’ll be impressed by the low-key yet trendy interior. Like many of the Scott’s Addition restaurants, ZZQ has an industrial feel, with tall ceilings and garage door windows for plenty of natural lighting.
On the menu, you’ll find all of your classic BBQ favorites, with a Texas twist. Barbecue at ZZQ can be ordered by the pound, but if that sounds a little too ambitious, you can also order smaller portions.
If it’s your first time visiting and you’re curious to try a ZZQ special, you might consider ordering the Tres Hombres sandwich — a killer combination of chopped brisket, pork, and sausage topped with pickled red onions.
Side dishes include jalapeño mac & cheese, buttermilk potato salad, and Terlingua cole slaw. There’s also a rotating daily special that could include Cowboy Baked Beans, Texas Cavier, or Chipotle Sweet Potatoes, and more.
So the next time you’re craving true Texas barbecue and don’t have time to make it to the Lone Star State, you’ll be happy you opted to visit ZZQ. Just don’t forget your appetite!
Address: 3201 West Moore Street, Richmond, VA, 23230
