There's something so alluring about a boardwalk hike. Perhaps it's the accessibility, lack of hills, surrounding marshlands or nearby coastlines, or maybe something else altogether. Whatever the draw, there's no denying that these trails are perfectly family-friendly. For one last summer adventure the whole family is sure to love, you can head to York River State Park and enjoy the trail to Fossil Beach.
Just 11 miles west of Williamsburg awaits a gorgeous waterfront park. York River State Park is set in a beautiful coastal estuary and is renowned for its exquisite wildlife.
The park offers over 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. The Backbone Trail is perhaps the best of all seeing as it offers the best of the park's beach, wooded forest, and spectacular marshes.
This out-and-back trail measures approximately 3.8 miles total. You'll be amazed as you catch glimpses of beautiful, lush meadows...
...marshlands filled with all sorts of birds and other majestic wildlife...
...and even secluded hardwood forests filled with fresh air and plenty of shade.
The portion of the trail that takes you along the boardwalk will eventually lead to Fossil Beach and the water.
While you're on the beach, be sure to look out for unique fossils and relics from millions of years ago.
Backbone Trail intersects with nearly every other trail in the park, so you'll have ample opportunity to create your own memorable outdoor adventure. To avoid the crowds, try to visit during the week.
