Chances are, you’ve visited or at least have heard of Monticello. It’s one of the most famous landmarks in Virginia, and it just so happens to be one of the handful of World Heritage Sites in the U.S., let alone Virginia. The primary residence of Thomas Jefferson, Monticello is significant both for its history and its architecture. In 1987, Monticello along with UVA were designated together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. While there are many ways to tour Monticello and learn about its history, you may also be interested to learn about the trail that will lead you right to this legendary property. Here’s more on the lovely Saunders-Monticello Trail in Charlottesville.
For those looking to experience the lovely hardwood forests surrounding Monticello, the Saunders-Monticello Trail in Charlottesville is an excellent excursion.
The trail measures 4 miles in total, out-and-back, but it's wonderfully maintained and feels very reasonable. As you make your way toward Monticello, you'll be hiking uphill, but the trail never exceeds a grade of 5%, allowing it to be an enjoyable experience for all ages.
It's a trail you won't want to rush given the beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains you'll spot along the way. On a clear day, the view is truly breathtaking.
The trail will eventually lead to a clearing, where you'll see signposts leading you to the Monticello Visitor Center. It's here that you'll pass through a security checkpoint if you wish to visit the gift shop, cafe, or sign up for a tour of the house.
