Arriving at the famed sand cave is like setting foot on another planet. Yet this attraction was naturally formed by hundreds of years of erosion.
The White Rocks are another breathtaking attraction in the Cumberland Gap Park. The rocks get their white appearance from the white quartzite pebbles that are embedded into the stone.
Yet it's the cave that draws the most visitors to this unique corner of Virginia. Made completely of sandstone, the massive structure has eroded over time to create the unique curvature that you see today.
This landmark isn't just beautiful, either; it's full of history. Before 1810, historians believe that nearly one quarter of a million travelers made their way through the Cumberland Gap on their way to the Ohio Valley.
