Rock Castle Gorge Hike is a challenging excursion located in Floyd, Virginia along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The term "Rock Castle" refers to a rare and fascinating geological attraction in the area. Six-sided quartz crystals naturally occur here, and reminded early settlers of castles.
Access to the trail can be found at 1670 Blue Ridge Pkwy, Floyd VA 24091.
The trail is located in Rocky Knob Recreational Area and stretches nearly 11 miles in its entirety.
While the trek is strenuous, particularly during the initial climb, hikers are rewarded with a varied terrain, abundant wildlife, streams, and gorgeous overlooks along the way.
As you continue towards the gorge, you'll pass a number of relics from centuries past, including a stone chimney from a former homestead and an old Appalachian Trail shelter.
The Historic Austin House can also be viewed along the way, although this property is privately owned and should only be admired from the outside.
During the final segment of the hike, the trail leads to gorgeous meadows elevated above the Parkway.
These grazing lands offer an absolutely breathtaking vision stretched out before the mountainous landscape. It's a wonderful spot for a picnic and, for those who don't have an entire day to commit to the hike, a place to turn around.
By far the most rewarding aspect of Rock Castle Gorge is a view into the spectacular gorge itself.
Reaching an elevation of nearly 1,800 feet, you'll feel as though you're on top of the world staring out over the elegant greens and blues of the mountainscape.
In fact, this overlook may be one of the most breathtaking views in all of Virginia.
