Travel can be expensive. That's true even if you aren't planning to fly. Gas prices, snacks for the road, souvenirs -- it all adds up! Fortunately, you'll discover plenty of things to do in Virginia for free. Below, we've outlined 5 of the state's most incredible natural wonders that you can witness without needing your wallet. Check them out:
1. Crabtree Falls
When it comes to Virginia's most incredible natural wonders, Crabtree Falls belongs at the top of the list. This massive series of cascades is the longest of its kind anywhere on the East Cost -- and east of the Mississippi River, too. Exploring the falls is an adventure, too. There's an accessible parking lot and viewing area as well as a staircase that will lead you to the top of the falls. One thing's extremely important: stay on the trail!
2. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
A 14,000-acre wildlife preserve on Virginia and Maryland's Eastern Shore, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a paradise of unspoiled landscape. It's the indigenous home of the Pocomoke and Occohannock people and is comprised of maritime forests, marshlands, dunes, and a beach. If you're lucky, you may event spot some wildlife! Please note: on most days, there is a $10 entrance fee for cars; however, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge does offer fee-free days. Additionally, those arriving by foot or bike can enter for free.
3. Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge
Located in Woodbridge, Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a treasure trove of protected wildlife, namely eagles. The refuge was created for wildlife along the Potomac River to thrive and be protected. It's also a refuge for Great Blue Herons -- there are an estimated 1,200 nests there!
4. Mount Rogers National Recreation Area
Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is the home of Mount Rogers, the tallest point in Virginia. The area measures approximately 115,000 square feet and includes beautiful hiking trails, forests, streams, and, of course, mountains. It's a must for any outdoor enthusiast in Virginia.
5. Natural Tunnel State Park
Last but certainly not least on our list of admission-free attractions in Virginia is the iconic Natural Tunnel State Park. William Jennings Bryan once referred to Natural Tunnel as the "Eighth Natural Wonder of the World," and it's easy to see why! This natural stone formation is as tall as a 10-foot-story building.
