Why This Small Town In Virginia Is A True Hidden Gem And Should Be Your Next Destination
Each of Virginia’s small towns has that special something that brands it as totally unique. Even so, there are some places that tend to fly under the radar unless you happen to be one of the lucky few to live there. Or in the case of Damascus, hike right through it.
This Appalachian community is beloved by outdoor enthusiasts for its proximity to some of the most iconic trails in Virginia, including the Appalachian Trail itself. But the allure of Damascus extends beyond its outdoor activities. Here’s more on this hidden gem of a town and why you’ll treasure your visit there:
Damascus is located in southwest Virginia, not far from either border of Tennessee or North Carolina.
Damascus is located at the convergence of not two, but seven trails. Two of the most popular of these are the Virginia Creeper Trail and, of course, the Appalachian Trail. This 2,000-mile trail leads hikers right into the heart of Damascus. This proximity to the great outdoors gives the town a special place in the hearts of hikers and bikers.
And yet, you don’t necessarily have to be an avid outdoorsman to appreciate the beautiful community of this town.
The Virginia Creeper trail winds from White Top Mountain all the way to Damascus. Beautiful in any season, this trek is a popular one for bikers and hikers. It's also a great place to stroll and catch a sense of the trail life.
The town itself is filled with plenty of colorful spots -- both figuratively and literally.
The parking lot of this local establishment happens to be the exact point where several major trails intersect. In other words, it’s a great spot to meet locals of the town as well as hikers who happen to be passing through. While you’re there, you’ll enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and some impressive breakfast items. Photographed above is the homemade crab cake Benedict.
For dinner and a place to stay the night, the Damascus Old Mill Inn is absolutely beautiful.
With cozy rooms and dining that overlooks Laurel Creek, it's a charming place to spend some time. Location: 215 Imboden St., Damascus, VA 24236.
