Here in Virginia, history is incorporated into the everyday landscape in a way that can be surprisingly beautiful. Take, for example, a remote winery just outside of Charlottesville that happens to be located near the Barboursville ruins. The aptly-named Barboursville Vineyards is situated within walking distance from this unique and haunting landmark that you'll want to explore.
Not far from Charlottesville, you'll find a breathtaking vineyard that's considered to be one oldest and most prestigious wineries in Virginia.
Barboursville Vineywards, established in 1976, was built on the original grounds of Barboursville, one of the most fascinating ruins in the area.
Barboursville was built between 1814 and 1822 for James Barbour, who was at the time the governor of Virginia. Its unique design is attributed to Thomas Jefferson, a friend and political ally of Barbour.
Many of the architectural features of Barboursville mirrored Jefferson's Monticello. The octagonal drawing room and portico were beautiful features of the original home.
It was Christmas Day in 1884 when an accidental fire burned nearly all of the house down, save the ruins that are still in place today. These hauntingly beautiful structures provide just a glimpse of the home's former beauty.
The ruins are just a quarter of a mile away from the vineyards, so you could take a delightful stroll back to the winery after exploring the historic grounds.
Barboursville Vineyards features an elegant tasting room where you can sign up for a tasting and perhaps even purchase a few bottles to take home.
When you visit, you'll notice the winery playfully incorporates pieces of the Barboursville history into the wine. One of the famous reds, for example, is known as the Octagon.
In addition to wine, the tasting room also offers snacks and smaller bites. Who knew that experiencing Virginia's unique history could be such a delicious experience?
Barboursville Vineyards is located at 17655 Winery Rd, Barboursville, VA 22923. Have you visited this unique landmark recently? We'd love to hear about your experience there!
