The Prohibition Era put a damper on the consumption of spirits, but Vermonters still constructed hidden stills and tucked away secret stashes of moonshine. Nowadays, moonshine is gaining newfound popularity and it's much easier to get a taste. Travel to the lakeside city of Burlington where you can send your palate on a tour of incredible distilled spirits at this moonshine tasting room.
Located on St. Paul Street in Burlington, you'll find the Mad River Distillers tasting room. More than just a bar, stop in and learn about the distilling process while you taste the fine hand-crafted spirits.
Mad River Distillers began crafting spirits from scratch on a 150-year-old farm tucked away in the Green Mountains in 2011. The small batch producer uses regional ingredients to ferment, distill, and bottle spirits with character.
Unlike the hidden speakeasies of times past, you won't need a secret password or a special knock to get into this joint. The rustic decor and friendly staff is more than welcoming to entice you to begin your tasting journey.
Enjoy a refreshing selection of bourbon, rye, rum, and apple brandy. The spirit you fall in love with here can be purchased by the bottle to take home.
The menu contains over 30 unique tasting flights and cocktails. There's something for everyone at this modern speakeasy.
An extensive stock of bitters, syrups, and shrubs allows the mixologists to pair whisky with other ingredients to make delicious cocktails. You can even buy cocktail accessories, books, and mixers along with the spirits. Take home the education you get at the tasting room straight to your own home.
The tasting room is open to visitors seven days a week. Stop by Sunday - Wednesday from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m., Thursday from 12 p.m. - 8 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. - 10 p.m.
