These places may not be all flash and frills, or perhaps they aren’t as big as other establishments, but after you taste their dishes you’ll definitely be coming back for more. Here are the best ‘hole in the wall’ restaurants that will pleasantly surprise you.
1. The Sandwich Shoppe - 52 Merchants Row, Rutland
This place may be small on the outside, but the menu is bigger than most places in Vermont... Not to mention the portion sizes.
2. Sugar and Spice - 45 Rt 4 E, Mendon
If you're looking to indulge on breakfast or brunch, this is a place that will blow you away. The biscuits and gravy are to die for and the waffle breakfast sandwich (pictured) almost looks too good to eat!
3. Burger Barn - Jeffersonville
Try one of their gourmet burgers and you'll be hooked on their local grass fed beef and hand cut fries. Options like 15+ different cheeses add to the creative menu.
4. Tim's Deli & Catering - 580 Portland St, Saint Johnsbury
This no-frills deli and grill serves up some of the best breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Northeast Kingdom. Takeout service is available at the counter as well as dining inside, you'll love the fast and friendly service at this great place. A local favorite!
5. Auntie Dee Dees Homemade Vt Baked Goods - 185 Mountain Rd, East Burke
You may have tried Auntie Dee Dee's artisan pastries, breads and baked goods at local farmers markets for the past 10 years, but did you know they recently opened a small retail shop on the Mountain Rd of East Burke? Stop in for some tasty croissants, scones, cinnamon rolls all from scratch as well as sandwiches, salads, cold and hot beverages. Artfully made and beautifully presented. Yum!
6. Aztlan Foods - 40 Foundry St, Waterbury
What a find! And 'find' is exactly right... it's a little tough to locate. But definitely stop here - it's so worth it. Get ready for the best burrito you'll ever have!
7. Lil' Britain Fish & Chip Shop - 116 North St, Bennington
Fish isn't the only thing that pairs well with the chips at Lil' Britain! Everything is fresh, consistent and simply delicious.
8. Dosa Kitchen - 400 Linden St, Brattleboro
This isn't a hole in the wall exactly... rather, it's a window hole in a truck. You'll especially love the chicken curry dosa at this Indian-food food truck. The owner preps the dosa batter at night and it ferments for 8 hours! A beautiful view and great food, simple and delicious.
9. East West Cafe - 2 N Winooski Ave, Burlington
This marvelous, authentic Thai cuisine restaurant may be small, but the food is packed with punch. Its superior Thai chefs produce some of the finest cuisine anywhere. Khao soy?! In Vermont?! This place is simply amazing. Oh, and BYOB with no corking fee!
10. Sweet Melissa's - 4 Langdon St, Montpelier
Live music, good food, awesome drinks and friendly service... What more could you ask for? If you're looking for a cool vibe - go here.
11. Curtis's BBQ - 7 Putney Landing Rd, Putney
You won't find linen napkins and a fine wine list here, but you WILL get some good old fashioned smoked BBQ. Ribs, chicken, pulled pork... all finger licking good!
12. Eaton's Sugarhouse Restaurant & Country Store - 5894 Vt Rt 14, South Royalton
Get ready for a superb breakfast!! You'll love their blueberry pancakes, home fries, and the bacon... wow!!! The bacon alone may be the best you'll ever have anywhere. Unbelievably good and really friendly people - a great experience.
