9 Moments Everyone Born In Vermont Will Always Remember
For a small state, Vermont has its fair share of historic and memorable moments. The 30th president of the United States, Calvin Coolidge, was born in Vermont. Burton Snowboards, the world-leading company in snowboard innovation and manufacturing, was founded in Vermont. And, we cannot forget about our beloved Vermont ice cream made by Ben & Jerry’s. Not all moments in this list will have happened in any one person’s lifetime, but if you are a Vermonter or have lived in Vermont for a considerable amount of time, these ten moments in Vermont will leave a lasting impression on you.
1. Senator Sanders announces presidential run in 2015
On April 30, 2015, Bernie Sanders, Vermont Senator and former Mayor of Burlington, began his campaign to become the Democratic Party's nomination for president. Sen. Sanders ultimately endorsed former secretary of state and Sen. Hillary Clinton when it became clear that she would become the party's nominee.
The best ice cream in the world, Ben & Jerry's, was started in an old gas station in Burlington by two UVM students. Since then, their ice cream operation has blossomed into a world-wide ice cream sensation.
3. Samuel de Champlain maps Lake Champlain in 1609
In the summer of 1609, Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer and navigator, became the first European to discover and map Lake Champlain. Hence, Lake Champlain is named after this French explorer.
On August 2, 1923, Vice President Coolidge was visiting his family home when news came of President Harding's unexpected death. Hours later, Calvin Coolidge was sworn into office at his family's estate in Vermont where he was born and raised.
On July 5th, 1977, a photo appearing to show Champ, the Lake Champlain monster, was taken by Sandra Mansi. The photo has become quite a hot topic ever since.
6. Jake Burton pioneers modern snowboarding in 1977
Snowboarding pioneer Jake Burton revolutionized modern snowboarding in the winter of 1977 with his small, homegrown startup, Burton Snowboards. Considered by many to be one of the inventors of modern snowboards, Jake Burton forever changed the snowboarding landscape.
During the month of August 2011, Tropical Storm Irene blasted through southern Vermont, leaving a wake of destruction in its path. The last recorded tropical cyclone to hit Vermont directly occurred in 1938. It's hard to forget such a storm when it only happened twice in a century.
The ice storm of 1998 brought to parts of Vermont 80 hours of continuous freezing rain. In parts of northern Vermont, around 6 inches of freezing rain was reported, making it one of the worst winter ice storms in Vermont's recorded history.
Possibly the most important Anglo-American scholar of the first half of the 20th century, John Dewey was born in Burlington and educated at the University of Vermont. John Dewey majorly reformed the library cataloging system with the Dewey Decimal Classification. He was also a prominent philosopher, having been one of the founders of the philosophical movement called Pragmatism.
