Here, we’ll look at a few of the most iconic buildings in Vermont that have come to identify the small and rural state. This list is not in order of most iconic.

The architectural gem of Billings Library was built and dedicated in 1885 by Henry Hobson Richardson and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Billings Library, today, is used as a study hall at the University of Vermont.

Construction of the building began in 1890 and was completed in 1891. The structure exhibits red sandstone and limestone and is built in the Richardsonian-Romanesque style. Since its conception, it has served as the Fairbanks Museum.

This large two-story, colonial style meeting house was constructed between 1787 and 1801 and was used as not only a meeting house for civic and governmental duties, but also as a congregational church. The house has been immensely well-preserved and was distinguished as a National Historic Landmark in 2000.

The architectural beauty and magnitude of the farm buildings and houses at Shelburne Farms is unparalleled in all of Vermont. The farm was built in 1886, and has since been a steady display of stunning and iconic architecture in Vermont.

The sixteen-sided polygon church was created between 1812 and 1814. Elegant in style and shape, the church has been unspoiled by time and decay, even though extensive renovations were needed in the mid 20th century.

Demonstrating a strong Victorian flavor of the 19th century, the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum is a historically and architecturally significant building in Vermont.

The Calvin Coolidge Homestead, located in Plymouth Notch, a small and anachronistic town in southern Vermont, was the childhood home of the 30th President of the United States, Calvin Coolidge. The well-kept buildings in the town showcase life and architecture as it was in the 19th century.
