You know that we love to find little hole-in-the-wall restaurants around the Beehive State. It’s always been our opinion that the places that aren’t fancy on the outside often serve up the most delicious food. This is also true with pizza places, and here’s one that’s been serving up tasty pies to college students and locals since 1980.
The Pie Pizzeria has five locations now, but it all started in this humble basement restaurant near the University of Utah.
The Pie's Underground location opened in 1980. It's just a block from the U of U campus, but it's easy to miss. You'll find it next door to the University Pharmacy, but you'll want to pay attention...like the location name says, it's underground. Watch for the bright red railing.
The pizza here is deep, deep dish. The crust is thick and chewy, and the sauce is seasoned perfectly. And of course, there's no shortage of cheese on these bad boys.
The Wiseguy Pizza is one of the best specialty pizzas here. It includes whipped cream cheese, chicken, spinach, artichoke, fresh tomatoes and basil, and topped with a balsamic reduction.
Bring your appetite - the pizzas are big, and their so loaded with toppings and cheese that you'll be hard-pressed to devour more than a couple slices. That's ok - this pie is even better the next day!
Visit The Pie Underground Monday through Thursday from 11:00 am to 1:00 am; Friday and Saturday 11:00 am to 3:00 am; Sunday Noon to 11:00 pm.
You’ll find other locations in Midvale (7186 S. Union Park Avenue), South Jordan (10627 S. Redwood Road) and Ogden (4300 Harrison Blvd.). Hours at other locations are different; visit The Pie Pizzeria’s website for details. We can’t wait for their newest location (3300 S. 200 E.) to open!
