When the weather heats up, it's time to find some nice, cool water and immerse yourself up to your chin. There's a trail in Moab that leads to several natural swimming holes, and they're the perfect spot for chilling out this summer. In fact, the Mill Creek Trail takes you to a Moab swimming hole and waterfall, where you'll never want to leave when the sun is out. It's the perfect summer destination in Utah.
Long ago, this area was a locals-only secret, but once visitors began flocking to Moab for its red-rock recreation (and that famous arch it has in its backyard), the word got out. Who wouldn't want to enjoy this beautiful place?
It's okay if you don't live in Utah - they'll still let you hang out at the swimming holes in Moab. Just don't leave trash everywhere and be considerate of others while you're enjoying your swim.
You'll find the trailhead at the end of Powerhouse Lane. There is a small parking lot there, but if it's full, please come back another day. This area tends to get very crowded, and residents often deal with cars parked illegally on their properties.
The trail is 7.5 miles out and back. It's an easy stroll, but you'll want to bring plenty of water along. A pair of water shoes is a good idea, too, since you'll have several water crossings along the way.
Watch for these large rocks with petroglyphs along the way. You'll find more ancient artwork on the cliffs along the trail, too.
Mill Creek winds its way through little red-rock gorges, creating several swimming holes along the creek.
There's an old powerhouse dam here, and it created some falls, with little pools downstream ...
... and if you keep walking up into the canyon, you'll find even more little pools. If the first few are crowded, keep trekking to find more.
Weekends here are very busy, but you might find a little more peace and quiet if you arrive early on a weekday morning.
