Arches National Park is one of the busiest and most popular national parks in the entire country. With more than 2,000 documented arches within this park alone, there is plenty to do and see. But what many people don’t know is that this Utah park is also quite dangerous. In fact, dozens of visitors find themselves in dangerous positions here every single year.

While there are many things to do in Arches National Park, hiking is one of the most popular. There are multiple trails, some much longer and more difficult than others, but all offering incredible rewards.

Unfortunately, as more people visit this national park, more dangerous incidents occur.

According to data obtained by Outforia, Arches National Park ranks in the top ten for the most search and rescue incidents out of all national parks in the entire country.

Based on the data, there were approximately 202 search and rescue incidents between 2018 and 2020 in Arches National Park alone, placing this park in the number 10 position on the rankings.

Many of these incidents occurred due to injured hikers on popular trails such as the Delicate Arch Trail and the Devil’s Garden Trail. Also, assistance was needed for individuals who suffered from heatstroke during the hot summer months.

Another national park in Utah — Zion National Park — also ranked in the top 10 for the most search and rescue incidents between 2018 and 2020.

According to Outforia, there were 285 search and rescue incidents in this southern Utah park. However, that’s not too surprising as this park is also home to one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the entire country — Angel’s Landing.

Other national parks that topped the list include Yellowstone National Park, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, and Yosemite National Park. Grand Canyon National Park came in as number one on the list with 785 search and rescue incidents.

When visiting national parks around the country, it is important that you educate yourself on the park including the trails, weather, elevation, type of terrain, and more.
