Most of us would probably never dream of peering into the roiling caldera of an active volcano. However, this one park in America is actually home to active volcanoes that are perfectly safe for visitors to hike and explore. Here’s what you need to know about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is located about 45 miles south of Hilo on the island of Hawaii. The park offers over 333,000 acres of lush landscape to explore and more than 150 miles of hiking trails. It’s also home to two volcanoes, including the legendary Kilauea volcano. Yes, that Kilauea.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and caused widespread destruction when it erupted in 2018. However, the park has now reopened to the public and is once again a safe and beautiful place to marvel at the primal forces of nature. Especially since Kilauea continues to produce 250,000 to 650,000 cubic yards of lava per day.

Guests can hike their way through volcanic craters, surreal desserts of hardened volcanic material, and even green rainforests. Visitors can also check out the park’s museum, which includes plenty of information about the history of the area and the enigmatic petroglyphs that can be found carved in stone in the park.

Though the park is safe to visit, the presence of active volcanoes means that you should always stick to marked routes, stay out of restricted areas, avoid cracks and fissures, and wear sturdy shoes and clothing.
