These Remote Islands Are The Galapagos Of The U.S. And Are Downright Magical
If you’re looking for a tropical escape right here in America, this remote chain of islands in California could be the answer.
Southern California’s Channel Islands National Park is a hidden, enchanting nature preserve that has been called the “Galapagos of North America.” Why is this place so special? It has no shops, hotels, restaurants, or other tourist traps. Instead, the Channel Islands draw you in with pure natural beauty.
We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life. While we continue to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, please take proper precautions or add them to your bucket list to see at a later date. The national park is comprised of five islands – Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel. You can reach them via a one- to three-hour boat ride or a 30-minute plane ride. On your way to the islands, you may spot leaping dolphins, whales, or even flying fish.

Once you’re on the island of your choosing, there’s so much to see and do. Each island has a unique character that can be experienced by hiking its own scenic trails. Wildlife and birds are abundant and the ocean views are unparalleled. Serious hikers should check out Santa Cruz Island for its 15 miles of gorgeous trails, while geology nerds should head straight to Santa Rosa Island to explore its unique sandstone formations and pygmy mammoth fossils.

If you feel like wandering offshore, hop in a kayak and paddle around the park’s coastal sea caves and kelp forests. You can book a guided kayaking trip with Santa Barbara Adventure Company that includes a ferry ride fromVenture, kayaking equipment, and a guide for 90 minutes. Whether you go solo or with a guide, don’t miss the park’s famed 100-foot-wide Painted Cave. It’s one of the largest sea caves on Earth.

Though there aren’t any hotels on the islands, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay for a while. Each island has a designated campground where you can pitch a tent and set up a home base for your explorations. If you want a truly unique experience, book a one- to 10-night trip with Santa Barbara Sailing. You’ll be able to sleep on the boat and even enjoy meals prepared by the crew.
