From Chasing Waterfalls to Scenic Train Rides: How to Enjoy a Perfect Weekend in This Winter Washington Town

Whether you desire a relaxing weekend or an outdoor adventure, it is impossible to be bored during a winter weekend getaway in Snoqualmie, Washington.

There are natural wonders, hidden gems, and bucket-list-worthy destinations that draw individuals to Washington all year long. However, there is something magical about the Evergreen State when the cold temperatures arrive and snow begins to fall. While there are towns that are truly magical during the winter months like Leavenworth and Chelan, one of my favorite places to recommend for a cold-weather weekend getaway is Snoqualmie. Less than 30 miles east of Seattle, this town has much to offer visitors from chasing waterfalls to scenic train rides. Come along and let me show you why Snoqualmie is one of the best places to spend a winter weekend in Washington.

Snoqualmie is similar to many other towns in Washington — as soon as you arrive, you will be inspired by its beauty. This town is home to approximately 13,500 people, and features small-town charm, yet is large enough that you’ll find plenty to see and do. This town is nearly 30 miles east of Seattle, making it a quick day trip destination. However, we recommend you come and stay for a while, especially in the winter months.

Snoqualmie is located along the Snoqualmie River and is best known for being the city next to the breathtaking Snoqualmie Falls, a gorgeous 270-foot waterfall, and one of the most well-known waterfalls in Washington. While many people come to visit these falls in the warmer months of the year, Snoqualmie Falls are particularly magical during the winter as a snowy landscape surrounds the falls and the water plunges into a large, half-frozen pool below. Plus, due to the accessibility of these falls, you don’t have to worry about long hikes to see this awe-inspiring natural wonder either.

While viewing the falls is an absolute must, for a little relaxation and time away from the stress of daily life, you may want to book a stay — or at least a spa service — at the Salish Lodge & Spa. Located right at the top of Snoqualmie Falls, this luxury destination has lodging, dining, and spa services. You may never want to leave.

Snoqualmie has a rich history filled with logging, the railroad, and more. You can learn all about this history by visiting the Northwest Railway Museum. On the weekends during the winter months, you can even take a scenic train ride from the Snoqualmie Depot to North Bend. Round trip, the ride is approximately two hours and unforgettable as you travel through snowy Washington landscapes. Make sure to purchase your tickets in advance as they are limited.

Even outdoor lovers will find plenty to do during a winter weekend in Snoqualmie. Just a short drive outside of town you can visit The Summit at Snoqualmie for a day on the slopes. Ski, snowboard, snow tube, and more for the perfect outdoor adventure. The Summit offers nearly 2,000 skiable acres, 25 chair lifts, and two unique mountains to explore. You’ll find something for all skill levels here.

Snoqualmie Pass is also home to several popular snowshoe and cross-country skiing trails. One of the most popular is the Snow Lake Trail, which actually begins at the Alpental Ski Area. On the trail, you will trek through a snowy winter wonderland to the gorgeous Snow Lake. Just make sure that you take a map and mark your hike so you don’t become lost — the trail can be a bit challenging to navigate while covered in so much snow.

Yes, Snoqualmie, Washington, is a wonderful day trip destination, especially if you are venturing from Seattle. But, with so many things to do here, we recommend you stay for a while. Chase waterfalls, relax, take a train ride, and enjoy the beauty of the area — you'll never be bored here. You are bound to have the perfect winter weekend in Snoqualmie.

What are some of your favorite things to do in Snoqualmie, Washington? Do you enjoy visiting during the winter months? Let me know. Just make sure that you bundle up with the proper cold-weather gear for a weekend outdoors in this Washington town. Preparation is key!
