The Remote Small Town in the Center of Vermont Locals Don’t Want You To Find

Roxbury, Vermont, is a tiny New England town surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and it just so happens to be in the geological center of Vermont.

While Vermont is full of small towns with plenty of charm and character, Roxbury is one of the most distinctive. Aside from this tiny town's population of under 1,000, Roxbury's claim to fame is that it's located in the center of Vermont.

Roxbury is a heavily forested and mountainous part of Vermont. And while the geographic center of the state is technically three miles from Roxbury Village, it's still worth visiting this quaint New England town. Read on to learn more about what there is to do and explore when you head to the middle of the Green Mountain state.

To reach Roxbury, take Route 12A north or south. When you arrive, stop by the charming library to get a feel for the town. You might even find a book or two about the town's history on the shelves!

Roxbury is surrounded by tons of natural beauty. This includes Roxbury State Forest, which spans over 5,617 acres and is used for a variety of purposes, including protecting wildlife and recreation. Also, less than an hour away, Little River State Park is a fascinating place to explore. It's located on the former site of a pioneering community from the 1800s, and you can still see some remnants of old buildings there today. Roxbury Falls is another lovely natural feature nearby.

In addition to being in the heart of Vermont, Roxbury exudes local charm, and there are a few spots that visitors should check out. One of them, Roxbury Cemetery, dates back to 1828. Walking through town, you may feel as though you've traveled back in time. Even Roxbury's post office has a quaint New England feel to it.

Of course, it wouldn't be a small Vermont town with a picturesque church and an old-fashioned town hall. And as you can imagine, the town is especially lovely under a blanket of fall foliage. But each season brings its own charms!

Need a place to stay? How about a room at a quaint inn? The Johnnycake Flats Inn is right in the heart of it all—both the town and the state—and offers a cozy place to stay while you explore all that the region has to offer.
