The Breathtaking Scenic Drive Through Utah That Runs Along The Provo River
There are hundreds of things to love about Utah. From its national parks and breathtaking hiking trails to tasty restaurants and family-friendly museums, the Beehive State is the ultimate place for adventure. But sometimes, you just want to sit back and enjoy all that the state has to offer and the best way to do that is on a scenic drive. With 28 scenic byways in Utah, there are countless places for a drive. But if I had to choose a quick day trip that is beautiful and, well ... perfect, I’d choose the following drive through Provo Canyon.
Utah County is home to multiple scenic drives including the Alpine Scenic Loop and Nebo Loop National Scenic Byway.
But one of my favorite drives is along Highway 189 between Provo and Heber City. It is approximately 20 miles long and takes you along the Provo River.
If you begin your drive in Provo, just a short drive up the canyon you can stop at Bridal Veil Falls to capture views of one of the best waterfalls in Utah.
While you can always admire the waterfall right from the highway, I recommend spending some time in Bridal Veil Falls Park, where you’ll find picnic tables, grassy areas, and a delightful trail that will give you a closer view of the cascades.
As you continue your drive, you’ll see the Provo River near the road. You may even spot a few fishermen as this river is one of the best fishing spots in the state.
You’ll also pass the turnoff for the Deer Creek Trail. This is actually a portion of the Provo-Jordan River Parkway Trail and is perfect for hiking, biking, and even equestrian use. The trail in its entirety is 8 miles long but you can always just walk a portion and turn around.
Highway 189 also takes you by Deer Creek State Park. This is a state park with something for every member of the family from boating and fishing to ziplines and beaches. It’s a fabulous day trip destination and a great place to stretch your legs.
Provo Canyon is a drive that’s short, sweet, and beautiful. It’s perfect for an afternoon adventure or a full-day escape if you make several stops along your way. Take your time — this drive is gorgeous.
