The Remote Small Town in Utah Locals Don’t Want You To Find
Near national parks, slot canyons, and unique attractions, this remote town is an adventure destination.
I love the small towns that dot Utah. From desert towns in southern Utah to mountain towns in the north, there are so many incredible places to explore. While many of these charming small towns are just a short drive away from most cities, there are a few remote towns that are also worth the drive. Hanksville, Utah, is one town that may seem completely out of the way, but if you want to disconnect and escape reality for a day or two, this is a must-visit destination.
Hanksville is an extremely small town in Wayne County. In fact, fewer than 200 people call this town home. However, when you want to get away, especially if you want to spend some time outdoors, Hanksville is the perfect place to set up base camp.
For example, this remote town in Utah is near bucket-list-worthy destinations like Goblin Valley State Park, Capitol Reef National Park, and Canyonlands National Park. The Henry Mountains are also nearby, with several opportunities for hiking.
For example, if you are up for a challenge, tackle the 5.6-mile Mount Ellen Peak Trail. This hiking trail takes you up the tallest mountain peak in the Henry Mountains. This trail is hard and definitely not for beginner hikers, but there’s a feeling of accomplishment after you conquer your journey. Not to mention, the views are breathtaking.
Not far from town is Little Wildhorse Canyon, a fun slot canyon that’s perfect for the entire family. However, as with all slot canyons, check the weather forecast to avoid flash floods before you begin your journey.
Make sure you stop by Hollow Mountain, the most unique gas station in Utah. This gas station is actually built right inside of the mountain. And, of course, when hunger pains strike, head to Stan’s Burger Shak, a small-town burger joint with some of the most delicious burgers and milkshakes in Utah.
Escape reality, even if just for a short time, when you visit Hanksville. It’s a remote town in Utah that’s perfect for a getaway.
