TSA PreCheck vs. CLEAR: What Frequent Flyers Need to Know (From Someone Who’s Used Both)
Unlocking the fast lane: A frequent flyer’s guide to choosing between TSA PreCheck and CLEAR.
Let me paint you a picture: it's 6:30 AM at a major airport, you’re frazzled after a chaotic morning of rushing to get out of the house and making sure everything got packed, and now you're eyeing the security line that looks more like the queue for a Taylor Swift concert than anything transportation-related. Now, imagine bypassing that chaos with a quick scan of your eyeballs or a flash of your boarding pass, gliding through a special line like a VIP.
That’s the reality with programs like TSA PreCheck and CLEAR. As someone who’s flown regularly for work, leisure, and everything in between, I’ve used both—and I’ll break down which one might be best for you, or why having both (if you can afford it) is the real travel cheat code.
TSA PreCheck: The Original Time Saver
- Cost: $78 for five years (as of 2025)
- How It Works: Apply online, schedule a quick background check/interview at an enrollment center, and once approved, you’ll get a Known Traveler Number (KTN) to use when booking flights.
- Where It Works: Over 200 airports with 90+ participating airlines
The U.S. Transportation Security Administration runs TSA PreCheck and is all about streamlining the security screening process. It doesn’t get you to the front of the line, but it does change the kind of line you’re in—and that makes a difference in my opinion.
When I have PreCheck on my boarding pass, I skip the shoe-removal shuffle, leave my laptop and liquids in my bag, and I’m through in minutes—even at JFK or FLL. And the best part? It’s relatively affordable and lasts five years, as of 2025. If you fly more than a couple of times a year, it saves time and avoids stress. For those who are perpetually concerned with missing flights, I can tell you from personal experience that having PreCheck eliminates a lot of that anxiety for me. Rather than getting to the airport three hours in advance, I can shave it down a bit and know that the line is almost always faster and shorter than the regular security line.
CLEAR: The Private Sector Speed Boost
- Cost: $189/year (often discounted with airline status or credit cards)
- How It Works: Enroll online, finish your biometrics at an airport kiosk, and start using it almost immediately.
- Where It Works: Available at over 50 airports and some stadiums/venues
CLEAR is a privately run identity verification service. Instead of waiting for a TSA officer to check your ID and boarding pass, you go to a CLEAR pod, scan your eyes or fingerprints, and get escorted to the front of the security line—either the standard or PreCheck line, depending on what you have.
Using CLEAR feels like skipping the velvet rope at a club—there’s a touch of drama as you walk past 50+ weary travelers and get ushered ahead by a smiling CLEAR agent. It's fantastic at airports like Atlanta (ATL), Denver (DEN), and Orlando (MCO), where the ID check line can be longer than the X-ray queue itself.
One caveat: CLEAR doesn’t replace TSA screening, so if you don’t also have PreCheck, you’ll still have to perform the full security song and dance (shoes off, liquids out, laptops unpacked). But at least you'll be at the front of the line.
TSA PreCheck vs. CLEAR: Personal Thoughts
Here’s my take, from experience:
- If you fly occasionally or on a budget: Get TSA PreCheck. It’s inexpensive, easy to use, and will save you time at virtually every major airport.
- If you fly frequently out of extremely busy airports: CLEAR can be worth the splurge, especially if your home airport is one of the worst offenders for wait times. Bonus: some credit cards (like the Amex Platinum) reimburse the full cost.
- If you fly all the time and want maximum speed and flexibility: Get both. This is the ultimate travel hack, as CLEAR gets you past the ID line, and PreCheck makes the screening part painless. Together, they feel like a secret fast track only seasoned travelers know about.
Air travel can be unpredictable enough without the added headache of waiting in line for an hour just to reach the conveyor belt. Investing in TSA PreCheck and/or CLEAR isn’t just about convenience—it’s about reclaiming some peace of mind in a place not exactly known for offering that. If you’re a once-a-year vacationer or a frequent commuter like I am, having a faster way through security is one of the smartest travel moves you can make. After all, no one ever said, “I wish I had waited in more lines at the airport.”
