One of my favorite ways to explore a new state is simply by hopping in my car and hitting the open road. There is something so rewarding about seeking out adventure this way, whether it’s the Americana nostalgia along the route or the ability to stop whenever you want and find something you didn’t know existed. An adventure is shaped on a trip like this.  And that is where the magic happens.

Speaking of magic, we teamed up with Ford to curate a seriously magical, scenic route through an expanse of the Pacific Northwest that will show you some truly incredible pockets of natural beauty. With multiple stops, dining options, and even an accommodation thrown in the mix, you can easily tackle this itinerary on a weekend and see it all. So hop into the new 2025 Ford Bronco Sport®, and see how easy it can be to discover the wilderness of America.

1. Oregon Badlands Wilderness
Caves & Rock FormationsOregon

Begin your adventure at this high desert gem just outside of Bend, Oregon. At nearly 30,000 acres, Oregon Badlands Wilderness showcases the area's best geological history, offering the opportunity to explore many things in one fell swoop. Experience the rugged Badlands volcano, characterized by inflated lava and sandy, ash-covered soil. The Dry River, active during ice ages, forms the boundary between Badlands and Horse Ridge volcanoes, with the latter shaped by faulting along the Brothers Fault Zone. The Badlands volcano, a unique rootless shield volcano, formed from lava flowing through a roof hole in its main lava tube, spreading to create its iconic landscape. Plus, there will be no shortage of mule deer, elk, antelope, yellow-bellied marmots, bobcats, prairie falcons, and golden eagles.

Visitors can explore volcanic pressure ridges, moat-like cracks, and remnants of human history. Nearly 50 miles of trails wind through ancient juniper woodlands atop Columbia River Basalts, offering hiking and horseback riding opportunities. This is the perfect way to kick off this road trip with a full serving of natural wonderment. For more information about visiting this area, check out the Oregon BLM Website.

2. Smith Rock State Park
National & State ParksTerrebonne, OR

Next up, we’re driving about 45 minutes from the Badlands to Smith Rock State Park. With over 650 acres at your disposal, you can go for a run, hike, climb, bike, slackline, horseback ride - you name it, it’s possible. Admire the dramatic cliffs and spires that rise above the Crooked River. Also, keep an eye out for bald eagles in this park! They are known for setting up nests during the nesting season, and visitors to the Bivy Ledge can quietly get an up-close look.

As far as hiking is concerned, there are 12 official trails in the park, plus miles of connecting trails in the nearby BLM land. If you don’t know where to start, check out this suggested trail guide courtesy of Smith Rock. The trail lengths are varied, and you’ll get an idea of what to expect from each. My suggestion:  the Canyon to Rim Loop, clocking in at 3.4 miles. You’ll be able to get a unique vantage point of the Crooked River, while also enjoying spectacular views of the canyon.

3. Mo’s Egg House
RestaurantsRedmond, OR

All that hiking and exploring likely worked up an appetite, right? Over in Redmond, Oregon, outside of Smith Rock State Park, you’ll find a down-home breakfast and lunch spot known as Mo’s Egg House. Family-owned with great food and even better service, you’ll have your pick of good eats here. From a simple plate of two eggs, a homemade biscuit, and hash browns to Monte Cristo French Toast, you’ll have both sweet and savory covered. Pro tip: try the homemade coffee cake. It’s why so many people keep coming back!

4. Tumalo Falls
HikingOregon

After a nice, hearty meal, let’s head south to Tumalo Falls, a 97-foot waterfall in the Deschutes National Forest. Tumalo Falls, a breathtaking 97-foot waterfall near Bend, is the type of natural marvel that will leave you in complete awe. Don’t worry about having to hoof it to get there, either. A quick, easy stroll from the parking area takes you to the main viewpoint, where you can see the waterfall in all its glory.

For an even closer look, follow the trail to the base of the falls or hike up to the upper viewpoint for a stunning panoramic view. If you’re feeling adventurous, continue along the Tumalo Creek Trail to discover more charming cascades and peaceful forest paths. It’s a great spot for picnics, photos, or just taking in the beauty of Oregon’s outdoors.

Keep in mind that there is a recreation fee to enter, $5 per vehicle per day. Open season is from June through October.

5. Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails
Bars & NightlifeBend, OR

Cap off your day of adventure with a meal at Zydeco Kitchen & Cocktails in downtown Bend. This upscale yet casual restaurant serves Northwest-inspired dishes with a Cajun twist, including vegan and gluten-free options. Co-owners Steve and Cheri Helt opened their doors in 2004 with the aim of using seasonal and local ingredients. Now, 20 years later, their love for high-quality food and craft cocktails still shines through the menu, especially with the help of Executive Chef Eric Joppie.

This is a great place to unwind after a long day, especially for al fresco dining and people-watching. Try the BBQ shrimp if you really want to see why Zydeco is dubbed the “best spot in town” by countless reviewers.

Riverfront Ski Cabin
Vacation RentalsSunriver, OR

Ahh, it's time to unwind. It’s been a long day, so why not give yourself a little treat in terms of comfort with a stay at the Sunriver Ski Cabin on Airbnb? Welcome to this beautifully renovated, vintage 1972 two-story round cabin on the scenic Spring River. While fully updated with modern amenities, the home lovingly preserves its vintage 1970s charm. The unique round design means the upstairs bedroom has partial walls that don’t reach the ceiling, offering plenty of privacy but less soundproofing—perfect for adventurous sleepers. Light sleepers might prefer the cozy downstairs bedroom for a more peaceful retreat.

A separate "little house" on the property adds extra fun and flexibility. Outfitted with a TV, Wi-Fi, foosball table, mini fridge, futon, and bikes, it’s ideal for a hangout space or a private office away from the main cabin.

Perched above the river, the cabin offers stunning views and a path leading down to a private dock and hot tub, perfect for soaking up the tranquil riverside vibes and relaxing after a long day.
