Why Solvang Feels Like Denmark

Solvang is located in the Santa Ynez Valley of Southern California. This one-of-a-kind town houses a population of just over 6,000 residents, and its small-town charm is simply unforgettable, whether you're visiting for the first or 100th time. It's the type of place that draws you in with its European charm, friendly locals, and Danish architecture in California. When walking around, you'll see several Danish windmills, numerous Danish bakeries, a small-scale replica of "The Little Mermaid" sculpture, and Danish street names. Several museums are worth visiting in town as well.

Take in some history at the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, which celebrates the legendary author. Born in Odense, Denmark, Andersen left his mark on the literary world with his novels, poems, and fairy tales, including "The Little Mermaid" and "The Emperor's New Clothes." To learn more about Danish culture, visit Solvang’s fascinating Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, which draws in thousands of curious tourists each year. If you're a fan of Thomas Dambo's giant wooden trolls, make your way to the California Nature Art Museum, where you can view the impressive troll, "Lulu Hyggelig."

Danish Days Festival

Solvang is also home to the annual Danish Days celebration, which takes place over three days each September and brings the city’s European heritage to life. This Danish heritage festival is a family-friendly event featuring food, live music, a beer-and-wine garden, history lessons, axe-throwing, folk dancing, parades, and more. This event is free, so dress up in your best "folkedragt" and make plans to attend in September!
