Dreamy Caribbean Getaways Just a Short Flight From the U.S.
Plan your next island escape with these easy-to-reach Caribbean destinations just a short flight from the United States.
Is an exotic Caribbean vacation calling your name? For those living in the U.S., the islands may be closer than you think! With pristine beaches, warm waters, and plenty of fun activities and relaxation, the following nine fabulous Caribbean destinations are only a short plane ride away, so you don't have to travel far from the States to experience a tropical vacation paradise. Here are the best Caribbean islands to visit from the USA:
1. Puerto Rico: A Passport-Free Tropical Escape

- Direct Flight Time From Major U.S Cities: 4 hours 15 minutes from Boston, 4 hours 10 minutes from New York City, 3 hours 35 minutes from Atlanta, 2.5 hours from Miami
- Passport Requirements: Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory; no passport needed for U.S. citizens to visit.
- Where to Stay: The Historic House in San Juan rental is an ideal vacation home for families visiting Old San Juan. The home is more than 200 years old but is decked out with modern features including a private pool, parking, and an indoor courtyard.
Listed in any U.S. territories Caribbean travel guide, Puerto Rico is an easy getaway, especially for those from the East Coast. The main island is a particularly popular destination for visitors seeking to experience the culture, history, and local flavor of the capital city, San Juan.
On my last visit to the island, my family and I vacationed in Old San Juan and had a blast exploring historic Castillo San Cristóbal, sampling the pina coladas at the Barrachina restaurant (where they were supposedly invented), and flying kites on the lawn of the El Morro fort.
Puerto Rico is also a wonderful place to experience outdoor adventures. I suggest taking this trip to the El Yunque Rainforest, where you can view majestic waterfalls and slide down a natural waterslide. Or travel to one of the territory’s smaller islands, such as Culebra, where you will find secluded beaches, coral reefs, and unique wildlife. These islands are reachable via ferry or by air. Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and easy to travel to, it's one of the best Caribbean islands for first-time visitors.
2. The Bahamas: A Classic Island Paradise Near Florida

- Direct Flight Time From Major U.S Cities: 3.5 hours from Boston, 3 hours from New York City, 2 hours 10 minutes from Atlanta, 1 hour from Miami

The islands of the Bahamas are a quick, easy trip from Florida (about an hour from Miami) and a short flight from other major eastern U.S. cities. The country is made up of 16 major islands and 100,000 square miles of ocean. Snorkeling for colorful fish in the clear warm waters, relaxing on the sandy beaches, and shopping at the Straw Market are some of my favorite activities whenever I visit this gorgeous Caribbean escape. Many visitors come to the island of New Providence and spend time in the capital city of Nassau. There are great restaurants, festive bars, and beautiful beaches to explore. The smaller islands, such as Cat Island and the Abacos Islands, are just as lovely and make for peaceful getaways for those just wanting to get away from it all.
Please check travel advisories before visiting the Bahamas, as there have been recent increases in crime in certain areas of the country.

Embark on a climb of the cascading 960-foot falls and spend time cooling off in the pools below. For a relaxing Jamaican experience, you may also want to visit the town of Negril. This area is known for its scenic views, mineral springs, and miles of sandy beaches.

The Dominican Republic is another quick and easy plane ride from many U.S. cities. The capital city of Santo Domingo is rich in history and culture. It is one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities and still contains many historic buildings. To learn more about the architecture and history of the area, I recommend taking a historical city tour. Other popular activities include safari adventures, cave excursions, and horseback tours. Santo Domingo also has a busy nightlife and vibrant art scene.
To experience lush beaches and fun watersports, you should head to the region of Punta Cana. This resort town is filled with luxury resorts, golf courses, and beach bars. - Where to Stay: If you are traveling to the island of St. John by yourself or as a couple, the Joy of Life Villa should be on your radar. This magnificent couples' retreat Airbnb offers gorgeous mountain and water views and includes access to kayaks and paddleboards at Hansen Beach.
For other no-passport Caribbean vacations, U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, which are only a few hours from Miami yet feel like a different world altogether. The U.S.V.I. is made up of three main islands. St. Thomas is a lively island full of great shops, restaurants, and the stunning Magens Bay Beach. St. John’s is a tiny island full of fun bars and eateries, and two-thirds of it is National Park. However, my favorite island is the big island of St. Croix.
I was fortunate enough to live on St. Croix with my family from 2017-2019, and during this time we made the most of our island experience. Although the island is laid back and chill, there is so much to do and explore. Our favorite excursions included taking a kayak night tour of the Bioluminescent Bay, snorkeling at the Buck Island Reef National Monument, and swimming at tropical Rainbow Beach.
The Jump Up block party in the town of Christiansted is a popular event that takes place four times a year. Highlights include Caribbean food, music, shopping, and appearances by the colorful Moko Jumbie performers who walk and dance on stilts.
8. Cancun, Mexico: White-sand Beaches and Exciting Nightlife

- Direct Flight Time From Major U.S Cities: 4 hours 25 minutes from Boston, 4 hours 10 minutes from New York City, 2 hours 40 minutes from Atlanta, 1 hour 55 minutes from Miami
- Passport Requirements: U.S. passport required for U.S. citizens to visit Mexico
- Where to Stay: If you're searching for a unique place to stay, this incredible treehouse Airbnb is perfect for nature lovers and anyone hoping to disconnect from day-to-day. Wake up to the sounds of the water and singing songbirds at this mystical retreat.
For those traveling to the coast of Mexico, Cancun is one of the most accessible Caribbean vacation destinations from the U.S. Located on the Yucatán Peninsula, Cancun is well known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, numerous resorts, and plentiful nightlife. The city is composed of two distinct areas: El Centro, the traditional downtown area, and Zone Hotelier, a long beachfront strip of high-rise hotels, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.
While it is a popular spring break destination, with several all-inclusive resorts in the area, we personally suggest something a little more laid-back and off the beaten tourist path.
Former Manager of Editorial, Megan Shute, has spent lots of time in the area visiting her retired parents: “If you’re hoping to get away from the central resort area, might I recommend Puerto Aventuras? Just an hour south of Cancun, this quaint resort area is perfect for a quiet getaway. I also suggest visiting the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary and Mayan Ruins — I’ve personally experienced Coba and Chichen Itza, both of which are worth a visit. I couldn't tell you which cenote we visited (and swam through), but I suggest booking a cenote and Mayan ruins tour like this Viator one.
9. Turks & Caicos: Turquoise Water and Luxury Beaches

- Direct Flight Time From Major U.S Cities: 3 hours 55 minutes from Boston, 3 hours 50 minutes from New York City, 2 hours 55 minutes from Atlanta, 1 hour 55 minutes from Miami

- Where to Stay: Imagine waking up to this waterfront view every day of vacation! Rock Spray is a stunning single-family home located on a private peninsula. Situated near Chalk Sound Marine Park, this home sleeps up to four people. This gorgeous oasis is a lovely place to relax and soak up the beauty and wonder of the islands.
Turks and Caicos is a Caribbean destination not to be missed! As one of the most stunning tropical vacations from the U.S., the islands are located south of the Bahamas, and a flight from Miami takes less than two hours! Once you arrive at this island paradise, you will be treated to wondrous beaches, turquoise waters, and stunning scenery.
This pristine destination is made up of 40 cays and islands. Many visitors vacation in Providenciales (Provo) and spend time enjoying Grace Bay Beach, a magnificent beach considered to be one of the best in the world. Provo is also home to many luxurious restaurants, shops, and hotels. Grand Turk, on the smaller Turks Island, houses a busy cruise port. Popular island activities include historical tours, horseback riding, dune buggy rides, and tons of water activities.
Turks and Caicos has some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean. There are opportunities to swim with sea turtles and colorful fish as you explore the beautiful barrier reef or an abandoned shipwreck. To make the most of your experience, I highly suggest booking an expertly guided tour such as this fun Half Day Cruise from Providenciales.
With quick flights to the Caribbean from the East Coast available, you can take a short getaway to enjoy the turquoise waters and sandy beaches at any of these islands. Many Caribbean islands can be visited on a cruise, as well. Discover the 12 Best Cruises You Can Take From the U.S.
