When life gets too busy it may be time to unplug and unwind with a good old fashion road trip. Something is alluring about rolling the windows down and hitting the road. The familiar rumble of the tires on the asphalt, the windows down and feeling the breeze through your hair, and the sense of adventure call us to hop in the car and experience it all over again. So when you are looking to slow things down head to the Amish country in Ethridge to remind yourself of what's really important.
As you travel down route 43 you will be crossing rolling hills and beautiful farmlands.
As if you have traveled through a time warp you will arrive in Ethridge where everywhere you look you will see charming nods to the past in a place that looks untouched by modern technology. You will find that this is the perfect place to unplug.
The first place you will want to visit is The Amish Welcome Center.
Take an Amish wagon tour to familiarize yourself with the area. The tour will be pulled by a horse and will stop at several Amish farms along the way. The guide will tell you all about the people and the way of life found around Ethridge. When you are done with your tour be sure to pick up a map of the local households that have farm stands and sell handmade gifts and fresh produce directly on their property. You can also find hand-painted signs pointing you in the right direction if you get lost.
Next up is the Amish Country Mall. This unique piece of Tennessee will have everything from delicious food to handmade items.
You could shop for a while at this mall so make sure to give yourself plenty of time. If you are taking this trip to unplug from it all then make sure to slow down and take your time as you shop. Marvel at the craftsmanship of the woodworking, take in the smells of freshly grown vegetables, and enjoy your visit.
As you travel around town you will be sharing the road with plenty of horse-drawn buggies. This town has such a charming authentic feel to it, you may just never want to leave.
There are plenty of antique shops and Amish stores that are worth visiting aside from the Amish Country Mall like Ike’s Amish Depot and General Store.
This charming and rustic little building looks like a quintessential country store. You will find many unique items in Ike’s among the creaking wooden floorboards. We suggest ordering lunch and sitting down to enjoy it. Not only is the food delicious but the prices are fantastic.
With so much to do in this little town, you might not be able to fit it all into one day and if you are slowing down then you won't want to anyways.
So extend your stay by booking a night at The Heritage Campground and RV Park. This campground sits on a former Amish farm and is a beautiful backdrop for a quiet weekend. Bring a camper, or a tent, rent a cozy cabin, or you can book covered wagons and stay the night in style.
When it comes time for a weekend trip to unplug and unwind we can think of nowhere else better than the Amish country in Ethridge. This little town is filled with charm and it's easy to why a slower pace is just good for your soul. Don’t get yourself too busy to not see the value in a road trip to the country, these kinds of towns are what make our Tennessee countryside great.
For another amazing country store, head over to the eastern side of the state and visit Troyers.
