If You Only Have One Day to Visit This Small Town in Tennessee, Here’s Everything You Absolutely Can’t Miss

Elizabethton Tennessee is a charming small town with a lovely downtown, nearby hiking, fascinating history, and a few hidden gems that may surprise you.

I find that Elizabethton, Tennessee, is one of those places that has a lot more to offer the more you start to look into it. I have to say this is one charming small town in Tennessee found in the eastern corner of the state. Here, you will find fascinating history, spooky abandoned places, and beautiful hiking trails, and I still even have a few surprises for you along the way. So, if you want to take a trip but are short on time, here is everything you simply need to do on a one-day trip to Elizabethton.

Oh, and before I go too much further, it would be a disservice to the good local community if I didn’t set something straight right off the bat. The town is pronounced Lizabethtun. It’s very important to remember that if you want to sound like a local!

As the sun starts to rise over the stunning rolling mountains found in Elizabethton and the nearby towns, this is the first place you will want to be. Find yourself a good view of the sunrise, which can be found in most places in town, so that part won’t be difficult. I’ve watched the sun rise over the mountains many times, and it never gets old. Soon after that, you will want to head right into downtown for a morning pick-me-up. There is no better place than The Coffee Company. With a steamy cup in your hand, stroll the downtown area, but make sure to stop by the covered bridge. This covered bridge was built in 1882 and is the pride and joy of the town. Spend some time walking around the small park, taking in the views, but best of all, you can even walk through to the other side.

If you love history, then there is no better place to go than Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park. I would recommend first perusing the museum and then walking the path down by the river.

The story told in this park will give you a deeper appreciation for the land and the people who went before to settle it. You can explore a replica of the old fort and really see what life was like during those early years long ago. Another historical stop that is worth checking out can be found down the road. The Sinking Creek Baptist Church is technically in Johnson City, but it is the oldest church in the state. Often referred to as “The Old Log Church,” this structure also has an intriguing story of resilience and survival.

Before you head off into the woods for some mesmerizing waterfall chasing make sure to stop by Pizza Inn for a pizza buffet. Now that you are fueled up head out to Blue Hole Falls. This is by no means a difficult hike but the payoff is incredible. After a short descent, you will find yourself at the base of a small waterfall but the pool it flows into is the most brilliant blue hue. This sapphire oasis glistens in the sun like diamonds and is one of the prettiest sights in Elizabethton. So whether you like waterfalls or just appreciate a trail with something a bit more unique this is a must-stop place.

This little town isn’t without a few surprises, too. It is almost impossible to miss, but there is a grimy and creepy old factory looming in the background of Elizabethton. The old Bemburg Plant has suffered through loss and even a fire, but stands out as a wonderful abandoned spot in town. If you love to look at the contrasting beauty of decaying man-made structures as they are reclaimed by nature, then make sure to check this one out. Also in the unique category is the Stateline Drive-Thru Theater. Americana at its finest, this old-school drive-in theater is an affordable way to enjoy a night out with your family.

With so much to see and do in this little town, I wouldn’t blame you one bit if you find yourself wanting to stay longer. I know plenty of people who have “just visited” and then the next thing you know, they bought a forever home. So no judgment here. Before you take the plunge into full-time East Tennessee living try it out with this lovely little tiny home in the countryside of Elizabethton. With the town as small as it is you will still be able to travel anywhere you need to go but still enjoy a quiet retreat for yourself.

No matter what you like to do, there is something for everyone in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The town is filled with amazing people and offers much more than meets the eye. So I would highly encourage you to visit this wonderful piece of the Volunteer State, and then, while you are there, make sure to also swing by Johnson City for another great place to visit.
