This South Carolina Nature Sanctuary Makes For The Perfect Serene Day Trip

On October 30, 2023, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the grand opening of the Sanctuary at Boyd Island in Columbia. The vision for Boyd Island was born during a canoeing adventure of Donnie and Susan Boyd, who visited and saw great potential in this seven-acre treasure located where the Broad, Congaree, and Saluda Rivers meet. It's the perfect destination for a serene day trip in South Carolina.

The journey to the Sanctuary at Boyd's Island begins with a hike on the Saluda Riverwalk trail, which is over seven miles out-and-back from the parking area off Candi Lane. The trail entry is at the center of the trail, with the island in the eastern direction.

This hike is very scenic with opportunities for birdwatching ...

... and to see many beautiful blooms during the spring season, including 75 species of flora.

The trail is a mix of paved concrete with some wooden boardwalk sections. Just before you reach Boyd's Island, you'll cross through pretty spider lily sculptures. (You can see the real spider lilies blooming sometime during May through mid-June in the Saluda River.)
