This Scenic 2,500-Acre Oklahoma Lake Delivers Major New England Vibes

I grew up in coastal New England, renowned for its stunning beaches, rugged coastline, boating, and lighthouses. Now that I live out west, I find myself getting homesick for the Atlantic coast now and again. If you're like me and would like to have a taste of New England without leaving the state of Oklahoma, I suggest taking a day trip to Lake Hefner.

About Lake Hefner

Located in Oklahoma City, the 2,500-acre Lake Hefner is a hub of outdoor recreation. Between boating, biking, hiking, kayaking, paddleboarding, golfing, and a playground, you can enjoy an entire day of relaxation, fun, and nature. As if this lake needed anything else, there are restaurants where you can grab a cocktail and a bite to eat while enjoying lake views. To me, it can't get more "New England" than that!

Things to do at Lake Hefner

Lake Hefner's calm water is ideal for paddleboarding and kayaking. However, it's quite common to see dozens of sailboats out on the water when the wind picks up. Growing up in New England, sailboats were a common sight, and I would often go sailing with my dad. In addition to non-motorized watercraft, motorized boats are allowed as long as they comply with no-wake regulations of 6 mph or less.

If you're looking to hike, walk, jog, or ride a bike, there are several paved trails, including the 9.5-mile Lake Hefner Bert Cooper Trail, which loops around the lake. For a shorter trek and one that leads to the lighthouse, take the 1.8-mile East Wharf Trail.

For golfers, head to the south side of the lake and book a tee time at the Lake Hefner Golf Club. There are two 18-hole courses here. As for families with small children, you can take them to the Lake Hefner Children's Playground.

The Lake Hefner Lighthouse

I love lighthouses which dot the New England coast, but if I ever feel homesick, I'll have to visit the Lake Hefner Lighthouse in Oklahoma City. Located at the lake's eastern shore, the construction of the 40-foot lighthouse was inspired by a historic New England lighthouse. This is a popular spot for your social media pics. You can take a walkway out to it, and sit on the bench overlooking the water by the lighthouse.

Where to dine at Lake Hefner

There are several lakeside dining options around Lake Hefner. The Red Rock Canyon Grill's menu has delicious offerings like rotisserie chicken, barbecue pork ribs, and salmon. This is a very popular spot for locals and tourists alike. The Hefner Grill has a wonderful menu with items such as seared ahi tuna salad, a Gulf Coast fish sandwich, and pecan-crusted trout. The seafood here absolutely reminds me of coastal New England! For food from south of the border, try Mama Roja Méxican Kitchen. Tacos and margaritas with a lake view? Sign me up!

How Lake Hefner is like New England

Between the Lake Hefner Marina, sailboats on the water, the Lake Hefner Lighthouse, and waterfront restaurants serving seafood and cocktails, this lake in Oklahoma City reminds me of New England. How about you?
