The Incredible Road Trip Through North Dakota That Leads You To 6 Stunning Lakes
If there's anything I truly love to do, it's a nice, old-school road trip. If you're feeling the urge to disappear for a day or so, and you're the outdoors type (same), I've gone ahead and created a relatively short road trip you can do in two days. This route will lead you to a handful of the best lakes in North Dakota that you might not normally think about exploring. How many of these North Dakota lakes have you already been to? Which one's your favorite? Let me know!
To follow along, check out this handy map on Google.
Our first stop is Lake Upsilon, a stunningly beautiful body of water located in northern North Dakota. With 10.9 miles of beautiful shoreline, Lake Upsilon is a much-beloved favorite among boaters, fishermen, and outdoorsy types.
Our next stop at beautiful Lake Renwick is a must-do for anyone interested in the simple beauty of North Dakota. It has some of the bluest water in the state, and it's a part of the gorgeous Icelandic State Park, so if you'd like to camp overnight you most certainly can.
Devils Lake might have a creepy name, but it's actually a delight. In fact, it's the largest natural lake in all of North Dakota, and I love it. It's located, unsurprisingly, in the town of Devils Lake... and it's a great place to spend the night (or longer).
Sibley Lake is a National Natural Landmark, and its astoundingly clear waters are perfect for a quiet - or adventurous - afternoon. Located in Kidder County, this little respite from the real world is calm, quiet, and utterly enthralling.
Lake Audubon is a much-beloved lake near Coleharbor, North Dakota, that measures in at an impressive 16,612 acres in size. The fishing is wonderful, the boating is terrific, and this is one amazing lake in North Dakota you won't want to miss. As the second to last stop on this adventure, it's a must-do for locals and visitors alike.
Last, but certainly not least, the gorgeous Lake Tschida might be man-made, but it's a wonder in and of itself. Surrounded by stunning hills and healthy trees, this North Dakota lake is one of the best hidden gems in the state.
These six stunning lakes are what I feel to be among the best in North Dakota - and best of all, most of them won't be all that crowded! If you decide to make this a multi-day event, I strongly recommend checking out all the options from our friends at VRBO if you want to find truly unique digs.
