History of Red River

The Red River area dates back to a time when the Ute and Jicarilla Apaches roamed the region and raided nearby pueblos. In the 19th century, the area became known as River City and was a land of opportunity and wealth as it was home to hundreds of gold, silver, and copper mines. During this time, the town boomed with all types of businesses lining its streets.

Eventually, the boom faded and homesteaders moved into the area. In the 1920s, the area began to gain a reputation as the ultimate summer escape as individuals would head to the town in the mountains to escape the summer heat that New Mexico is known for. The homesteaders would even rent out abandoned miner’s cabins for those who were in search of a place to stay. Today, people from all over still head to Red River to escape the heat, explore, and enjoy the great outdoors.
