Ruidoso, in southeastern New Mexico, is surrounded by spectacular scenery. This town of 8029 people lies in Lincoln National Forest, in the shadow of the Sierra Blanca Mountains. This makes it a popular base for outdoor enthusiasts. Ruidoso is firmly in Billy the Kid Country and, even today, this mountain resort town maintains a Frontier feel. The indie stores, quality restaurants, and picturesque setting make this town an appealing place to visit or to call home. If you don’t brake for Ruidoso, you’ll regret it!

From Ruidoso you have gorgeous views of the mountains, especially Sierra Blanca Peak (11,973 feet high) and Lookout Mountain (11,580 feet high).

The Lincoln National Forest extends in all directions, a carpet of green.

The Grindstone Lake area is a popular spot with hikers. There are several trails to choose from, which vary in difficulty and length.

The Noisy Water Winery is an unexpected delight (2342 Sudderth Drive). In addition to offering gourmet food items and a sampling of New Mexican wines, it also has its own label - the Relleno Brothers – and is known for its green chile wine.

The Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts opened 19 years ago and it’s a great venue for music, dance, and theater performances (108 Spencer Road, Alto).

If you order the Philly cheesesteak sandwich, you won’t be sorry.

For dinner, try the Rio Grande Grill and Taproom (441 Mechem Drive).

The jalapeño poppers appetizer, the pasta dishes, and ribs are standouts on the menu at this brewpub, which also has fine stout.
