Here’s Why You’ll Want To Take New Mexico’s Most Budget-Friendly Road Trip
For a lot of people, a New Mexico road trip brings to mind our big cities, like Albuquerque or Santa Fe. However, if you're looking for a weekend getaway you'll want to check out this adventure in the southern part of the state, especially if you're looking for a trip that's easy on the pocketbook! Here are some of the great things that await.
Mesilla is a hidden New Mexico gem. Though often eclipsed by the big city of Las Cruces, the town offers a variety of galleries, shops, and dining, all wrapped in an air of history and tradition.
There are a number of cute and affordable Airbnb options right in Mesilla or in nearby Las Cruces. For example, this charming adobe casita near the Plaza offers traditional New Mexico style but all the modern comforts, like refrigerated air, a large HDTV with cable, and Wi-Fi. And don't forget the casita's private, tree-shaded patio garden.
One must-see (right on the Plaza) is the Basilica of San Albino. This historic church is a work of art, with old brick, gilt-accented wood altar, and stunning stained glass windows.
Pop in and browse one of the small shops that surround the Plaza too. One good bet is Heart of the Desert Pistachios & Wine. Sample nuts from a local grove and pick up a bottle or two of their award-winning New Mexico wine. Look for other items too, like gourmet foods and sweets.
When hunger hits, head to Andele! This locally owned restaurant in Historic Old Mesilla has been serving authentic Mexican and Southwestern food for more than 18 years. They serve breakfast too, with traditional eggs and bacon, or Southwestern favorites like huevos rancheros and breakfast burritos.
Tacos Al Carbon are the house specialty. The lean cuts of beef, pork or chicken are marinated overnight, then slow cooked on a vertical rotisserie by an open wood fire. They come heaped on a plate accompanied by fresh tortillas, frijoles charros, wedges of lime, grilled onion, cilantro and Mexican cole slaw.
Nearby outdoor recreational attractions include the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park along the Rio Grande (shown), the spectacular Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, and the always magical White Sands National Monument.
Dripping Springs is another nearby outdoor destination. Aptly named for the small waterfall that drips down off the rock face, this unexpected spot of water in the desert is also the site of a former resort, remains of which are visible along the mountain trails.
In all, with the laid-back, historical ambiance of Old Mesilla, its shops and cafes, and ample outdoor recreation nearby, this spot in southern New Mexico makes for a casual weekend getaway that won't break the bank.
