It’s Impossible To Drive Along Nebraska’s Highway 87 Without Pulling Over To See Why There’s A Toilet On A Hay Bale

By now you’re probably familiar with Nebraska’s most famous roadside attraction, Carhenge. But did you know that just up the road, there’s another roadside attraction that’s smaller but way more unusual?

On Highway 87, just two miles north of Carhenge and the town of Alliance, you'll find a uniquely Nebraskan sight.

There's no fanfare, no big sign or even a fence separating it from the highway. If you're not looking for it, you might even roll right past it. But once you spot it, you won't be able to resist making a stop to see it closer.

The simple but fun little stop consists of some stacked hay bales, a (non-working!) toilet, a recliner, and a pipe next to a sign proclaiming "FREE WIFI." It is, indeed, a great place to stop and take a rest - just don't try to use the toilet, and don't count on that wifi working.

This charmingly weird attraction was created by Alliance man Leonard L. Green. He probably couldn't have predicted that his quirky sense of humor would result in something that so many people would enjoy. Leonard passed away in 2013, many years after giving life to the Nebraska Rest Area.

As you might expect from an attraction that's outside and made partly of natural materials, the hay bale rest area has changed somewhat over the course of its lifetime. As the hay bales have aged and been replaced, the elements of the rest area have changed position and also been replaced as needed.

We weren't able to uncover who takes care of this unique attraction, but it seems likely that the people of Alliance put in the effort to keep it around.
