Why You Definitely Should Not Be Dreading Winter In Nebraska

We haven't always been entirely enthusiastic about winter in Nebraska...okay, we've actually been openly hostile toward Nebraska winters. But it's really not all that bad - in fact, there are even a few things to sort of like about winter. As the first cold winds and wintry storms start to roll in, remember that there are some good sides to the coming season.

1. The bugs are finally dead.

Just like they should be.

2. Those cold-weather accessories are actually pretty fun to wear.

Would we rather be wearing sandals than snow boots? Sure. But if we've got to keep warm, we're going to look good doing it.

3. THE FOOD.

Nobody cooks up a delicious midwestern holiday meal like a Nebraskan family! My mouth is watering just thinking about the deep-fried turkey...

4. The beautiful, colorful holiday lights.

Minden is spectacular around Christmas with its legendary light display. You can catch other great displays all over the state, too.

5. There's always a chance of a snow day!

6. ...And that means snowball fights...

7. ...And sledding...

8. ...And maybe even ice skating (if it gets cold enough to freeze the lakes and ponds solid).

9. Football.

This season didn't get off to the best start for the Huskers, but that doesn't change the fact that winter is all about the football.

10. Snuggling.

Whether you're on your own or with someone you love, is there anything better in the winter than curling up under a big, warm blanket?

11. Hot Chocolate.

Ahhh, delicious liquid chocolate...I love coffee, but hot chocolate is the absolute best way to warm up after shoveling snow.

12. Temperature Tuesdays.

Runza is so sweet. In the bitter cold of January and February, the temperature at 6 am on Tuesdays is the all-day price for an original Runza (if you buy fries and a drink). Just don't ask them if they'll pay you for negative temperatures. Trust me - they do not find that funny.

13. The snow really does make everything beautiful.

The Nebraska landscape in the winter is simply stunning. With a hushed blanket of snow covering everything, our state can look absolutely magical.
