For a unique overnight Minnesota state park adventure in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, head to the southwest corner of the state and the historic town of Luverne. This is where you'll launch from.
Luverne is a history-filled town that's worth taking some time to explore.
Its charming downtown almost looks as if it's frozen in time - but you'll have an opportunity to revisit Luverne a little later.
First, it's time to head out to the cliffs for some cragging.
The rock climbing area at Blue Mounds State Park is just north of Luverne at the southernmost end of the park itself.
You access it from outside the park - if you head into Blue Mounds' main entrance, you won't be able to reach it by vehicle.
After a good day of scrambling, head back into town to quench your thirst at Take 16 Brewing and stretch your legs with a walk around Luverne.
To see the brewery's hours or to check out what's on tap, visit Take 16 on the Web.
Once you've cooled off, it's time to head back into the park and get your camp set up.
As you enter, you'll pass the prairielands where several dozen of the state's bison herd roam.
Driving along the bison area, you'll eventually reach the parking lot for the tipi sites - it'll be on your left.
Look for a cart - the sites are cart-in - to use to haul your gear to your tipi.
Once you're all set up, start a fire, kick back, and enjoy a night beneath the stars.
The next day, take some time to explore the rest of Blue Mounds State Park.
It's a real gem in the state park system. A hike along the moderate Cliffline Trail is a great way to experience much of what the park has to offer.
For more information about the park, generally, or about rock climbing, its bison herd, or reserving a tipi site, visit Blue Mounds State Park's web page on the Minnesota DNR website.
