Our route for you generally tracks with the byway, but we do go slightly off the beaten to make sure you see all of the good stuff. Use Google Maps to follow our itinerary on your smartphone.
1. Detroit Lakes
Detroit Lakes is the western terminus of the byway, and this bustling lake country community is where we'll begin our route. Get a jump start by spending the night before at the beachfront Best Western Premier The Lodge on Lake Detroit.
2. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
The byway tracks part of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. So, if you're a birder or wildlife enthusiast (or just a regular nature lover), you'll definitely want to stop off at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
3. Ponsford
If you happen to be traveling the byway in August, be sure to visit Ponsford, where the Pine Point Community hosts its annual powwow. Visit the Pine Point Community Council's Facebook page for updates and details.
4. Park Rapids
The laid-back town of Park Rapids is the next stop on your Lake Country journey.
5. Itasca State Park
The headwaters of the continent's most important river - the Mississippi - can be found at marvelous Itasca State Park. It's the state's first - and one of its largest - state parks.
6. Dorset
A stop in this charming community is a must, as it's the Restaurant Capital of the World. Go during warmer months, though, because many of its renowned eateries are seasonal.
7. Walker
The byway ends (or begins if you're traveling westbound) at the quaint town of Walker, which offers plenty to explore and enjoy. If you're interested in kid-free lodging in the Walker Area, consider staying at Leech Lake Resort.
