In 1846, Father Frederic Baraga, known as the "Snowshoe Priest," and his Native American guide were caught in a violent storm on Lake Superior while traveling in a small boat to help with a reported epidemic. Miraculously, they were blown over a sandbar and found safe harbor right at the mouth of the Cross River. They erected a small wooden cross in thanksgiving, which has since been replaced by a striking granite monument. Today, you can explore this historic site and relax on the adjacent, protected cobblestone beach, which is a perfect spot for skipping rocks or enjoying a quiet picnic by the water.
