This Tiny Town in Michigan Feels Like a Living Time Capsule
Indulge in lakeside ice cream, take walks on the beach, and enjoy delicious local food in New Buffalo, Michigan.
For as long as I can remember, trips to New Buffalo, Michigan, have felt the same. I mean that in the best way. If you were to pluck any memory out of my brain from New Buffalo, you’d find me at the same spots. It might be playing in the sand or sunbathing at New Buffalo Beach or buying a shirt from the staple Stray Dog Bar and Grill. The tiny lakeside town of New Buffalo has hardly changed.
This southwest Michigan community is particularly popular in the summer. With a wholesome vibe that often makes you feel like you’re on the set of Leave It to Beaver, there’s a small-town charm that has somehow managed to survive despite being so close to cities like Chicago and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
One of my favorite things to do is grab breakfast at Jackie’s Cafe. Here, Chef Jackie Shen skillfully combines her expertise in French cuisine with her Hong Kong roots to create a truly unique and welcoming breakfast joint. My personal favorite breakfast dish on the menu is the blueberry French toast that comes with delicious, local Michigan maple syrup.
Just around the corner is a beloved dinner spot. I still remember seeing kids wearing Stray Dog Bar and Grill shirts in elementary school. This on-the-water spot offers classic bar food and even has an official gift shop directly across the street. The Stray Dog always has great energy, and it's amazing to see my friends start to bring their young children here for dinner all these years later.
Of course, no trip to New Buffalo would be complete without a day in the sun. The New Buffalo Beach has been welcoming locals and visitors alike for generations. Whether you’re enjoying a hot summer day on the sand or strolling the lakefront during crisp weather, it's like the footprints left in the sand are still yours from when you were a small child playing with your bucket and shovel.
Another classic stop on your New Buffalo itinerary has to be Oink's Dutch Treat. Swing by to try one of their unique ice cream flavors like the Michigan Pot Hole. Additionally, the New Buffalo Railroad Museum is a time capsule within itself.
While the town has largely stayed the same, there are a few recent updates to the area. New hotels, such as The Neighborhood Grand Beach and Marina Grand Resort, have emerged. You’ll also find a handful of wineries just a short drive away, like the quaint Hickory Creek Winery. Fancy a pint? The Ghost Isle Brewery is a relatively recent addition to the food and beverage scene.
One of the many things I adore about New Buffalo is that I can largely count on it to be the same today, tomorrow, and 10 years from now. I know I’ll still be sitting on the beach, enjoying an ice cream cone, and making new memories in this nostalgic community. What other towns in Michigan feel like they’re a step back in time?
