Michigan has its fair share of small towns and lovely cities to explore. From Detroit to Ludington, there’s a setting here for each and every Michigander. But there’s one lovely little community in the Great Lakes State that might just be the most gorgeous spot you’ve ever experienced. When you’re ready for a fantastic adventure, look no further than Copper Harbor, one of our favorite hidden small towns in Michigan.
Situated on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Lake Superior, Copper Harbor is undoubtedly one of our state’s most underrated natural gems.
With a population of fewer than 200 year-round residents, this delightful community certainly lives up to its "small town" reputation.
The town itself boasts a rich history. As its name suggests, Copper Harbor played a major role in northern Michigan’s copper boom of the mid-1800s.
So, what sorts of fascinating attractions will you find in this lovely little town? While its population is small, Copper Harbor’s natural splendor might just overwhelm you.
Venture to Fort Wilkins Historic State Park, which once served as a fort for the United States Army. Visitors can step back in time at this unique locale.
Catch stunning glimpses of the Copper Harbor Lighthouse, which was built on the waterfront in 1848. Today, it’s open for tours and houses a small museum detailing the copper trade.
Ready for some breathtaking views? Hop in the car and make your way along Brockway Mountain Drive, which gives way to incredible lookouts.
As if that weren’t enough, Copper Harbor also serves as a hub for journeys to Isle Royale National Park. When weather permits, enjoy visits to this stunning natural gem.
You’ll also find plenty of chances for family fun in Copper Harbor. From mini golf to bicycle rentals, the town’s adventurous spirit is simply contagious.
Before you leave town, stop in at Brickside Brewery for a pint, then do some shopping at the area’s charming Country Village Shops. You’ll certainly want a souvenir!
If you truly can’t get enough, why not settle in and stay the night? From the Pines Resort to the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, Copper Harbor has plenty of lodging options.
