A one-tank road trip in Michigan can be quick and easy or expanded for a full weekend getaway. And, yes, it is a conglomerate of the very best road trips in Michigan, so this trip will offer you a taste of local life along the way.

This northern Michigan road trip will take you all the way to the Thumb (or vice versa from the Thumb to Traverse City). So if you live Up North or near Lake Huron, or you're trying to maximize your weekend travel plans, this may be the trip for you. This one-tank trip near you in Michigan takes about eight hours and spans nearly 400 miles.

We did some digging and learned that the average tank of fuel will take you between 300 and 500 miles before hitting empty. Of course, that depends on the model of your car. 2. Charlevoix

Out next stop along this Michigan coastal towns road trip is Charlevoix. One of the most scenic towns in Michigan is, undoubtedly, Charlevoix, and we're sure you'll agree. Known best for its whimsical mushroom houses designed by Earl Young, this town has a bit of a fairytale feel. You can experience them yourself on a self-guided tour, and visit the Weathervane Restaurant for a meal or spend the night at Weathervane Terrace Inn & Suites, both created by Earl.

Head downtown, and you'll discover plenty of locally-owned shops, restaurants, cafes, and more. Home to Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, which protects a number of historic Lake Huron shipwrecks, Alpena is worth a visit for those interested in maritime history. But that's not all this city sitting on the edge of Lake Huron's stunning shores is known for. Visitors come to Alpena for its dark skies, and three designated Dark Sky Parks, including Negwegon State Park, Thompson Harbor State Park, and Rockport State Recreation Area. Alpena is truly one of the best stops on a Lake Huron road trip, especially for those who love stargazing.

7. Tawas City

The Tawas Bay area is an outdoor person's paradise: perfect for hiking, kayaking, and catching fish in the lake. Known for its sandy beach and marina, you'll also love the Cheeseburger Days festival held over the course of 10 days every summer in Caseville. Located along the Pigeon River at the mouth of Saginaw Bay, Caseville is a popular summer destination for beaches, swimming, and boating.

10. Port Austin
