The Ultimate Weekend Itinerary If You Love Spending Time Outdoors In Michigan
Experience Michigan's natural wonders with a weekend itinerary featuring kayaking at Pictured Rocks, dining at Tahquamenon Falls Brewery, and hiking the Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls Trail.
When it comes to the Mitten State, there are three major natural wonders that come to mind; the Great Lakes, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and Tahquamenon Falls. You’ll be able to see all three of these epic attractions on this unforgettable weekend trip. If you want to experience the best outdoor adventures and activities in Michigan, this itinerary will do the trick.
From national parks and campgrounds to waterfalls, canyons, and more, there is so much to love about America’s natural splendor — and June, designated as Great Outdoors Month, is the perfect time to get outside.
This two-hour and 10-minute road trip will take you to see two gorgeous natural wonders along with beautiful forest scenery.
Kayak At Pictured Rocks
We’re starting our outdoor adventure at one of the best places to see in Michigan.
Dip your paddles into glorious Lake Superior on this bucket list worthy kayak excursion. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is best viewed on the water by kayak or boat. At Uncle Ducky’s kayak rentals, you can complete a 3-hour kayak trip that will leave you plenty of time to enjoy other activities during the day.
On this guided tour, you’ll see gorgeous rock formations, coves, and even a shipwreck. Don’t forget to bring along bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, and some snacks for your excursion. Dry packs are provided by the kayak company so your items won’t get wet during your trip.
Dine at Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub
After your kayak excursion, take a drive to grab a bite to eat at this tasty brewery.
Less than two hours from Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub is the only brewery in the state park and just a 10-minute hike to the Upper Falls! Here, you can order the Upper Peninsula’s famous pasties, tasty burgers, and Lake Superior whitefish in a delightfully rustic setting.
See The Largest Waterfall In Michigan
A panoramic view of the very picturesque Tahquamenon Falls and Tahquamenon River during Autumn, Upper Peninsula, Michigan, USA
Once you’ve finished your meal and had a pint, take the short 0.6-mile hike to see the glorious Upper Falls. More than 50,000 gallons of water rush over the falls every second which creates a powerful and soothing sound throughout the forest. The water has a distinct color reminiscent of root beer due to the tannins from local trees. There are several viewing platforms along the way to take great photos.

Spend The Night At Paradise View
After a long day full of adventure, it’s time to unwind in your own private cabin.
This 2-bedroom 2.5-bathroom Airbnb is located directly on Whitefish Bay with breathtaking water views. You’ll find excellent bird-watching opportunities here along with seeing freighters pass by. A fully equipped kitchen, two decks, and a small beach await you at this rustic and charming cabin in Paradise, Michigan.
Head Out For A Big Hike
On day two, we’re venturing out for a challenging hike to the Lower Falls
After a rejuvenating night in the cabin, it’s time to head back to Tahquamenon Falls State Park for an epic hike. The Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls Trail is a 10.8-mile out-and-back hike that is moderately strenuous and takes roughly three and a half hours to complete. While the Upper Falls has a 50-foot drop and is more than 200 feet wide, the Lower Falls has five smaller falls around a picturesque island.
Take your time on this hike to enjoy all the beautiful views of the Tahquamenon River and the lush forest. You have all day to explore and once you’re finished, head back to your cabin and unwind while you watch the moon rise over the bay.
