Here Are 12 Things You Better Have If You Want To Survive In Massachusetts

Essential items and attitudes needed to thrive in Massachusetts, from sarcasm to snow boots.

Here's your survival kit for a Massachusetts adventure. Please don't annoy the wildlife and under no circumstances ever park your car in Harvard yard. You'll get towed.

1. An appreciation of sarcasm.

That New England chill isn't just a part of the weather. We can be sarcastic buggers up here.

2. A beach sticker.

If you live around one of our many gorgeous beaches, that is. You don't want to be paying the tourist rate for relaxing in your own backyard.

3. Irish spirit on St. Patrick's Day.

Especially in Boston, everyone's suddenly Irish on March 17th. Buy the next round of green beer and join the fun.

4. A few cans of Boston baked beans.

Everything goes well with baked beans. It's a science fact.

5. Snow boots

No one wants chilly wet toes. And that's what you'll get come February without a hardcore pair of winter boots.

6. A sense of humor.

Our politics can be bizarre, our weather can be brutal, and our construction season seems to last all year. You'll want to be able to find humor in the little annoyances.

7. A few hoodsie cups in the cooler.

They keep you cool, make you smile, and come with their own spoon. Perfect food? Pretty close.

8. Some serious driving skills.

Winter potholes, nonsensical urban signage, and sharing the road with tourists (we love you, we're just late for work and stuck behind your Duckmobile). Driving in Massachusetts can be a little....wacky.

9. New England-style hot dog buns

You've gotta be able to butter up the sides and toss those puppies on the grill.

10. A coffee addiction.

Or at least a mild obsession. We're a caffeinated people and know a good cup of coffee when we meet one.

11. Something pastel. Preferably a sundress or polo shirt.

WASPs. WASPs as far as the eye can see (at least, on the Cape). Whether preppy is your preferred uniform or you just want to go play a round of golf, it wouldn't hurt to have a bit of Vineyard Vines in your closet.

12. A big open heart.

Massachusetts tries to be a place of inclusion and acceptance. Unless you're a Yankee's fan. Then it's just a place of tolerance. Bring your biggest heart and be ready to welcome all kinds.
