The Historic Massachusetts Town Locals Hope Stays Off Tourists’ Radar

There's a hidden historic town in Massachusetts, only a short trip from Boston. A day in Saugus is like traveling through the story of the Bay State.

When I visit Boston, it's usually for a special event — my first visit as an adult was in 2024, when I went to see the first farewell show of country legend Alan Jackson at TD Garden. But after an event, I take some time to visit some of the area's hidden gems. I've eaten my way through the city's spectacular Chinatown, hopped the border to Canobie Lake Park in New Hampshire, and visited Harvard's storied museums. However, one of my favorite spots in the area is a hidden historic town in Massachusetts: Saugus, which is located just 20 minutes from the city center by car.

The unique town of Saugus is home to a great dining scene and beautiful natural scenery, but what really sets it apart from the crowd is how it takes you back in time. There are sites dating back to the earliest days of this country, but if you're here for a more casual experience, you can also take a trip back to the rollicking 1970s for a one-of-a-kind meal! It's just a hop, skip, and jump away from Boston, but sometimes, it feels a world away in the best way possible.

What Makes This Historic Town So Special

Saugus might be close to Boston, but it really feels like a different world. The town is surrounded by a thriving tourist highway in one direction, and you're not far from some of the most beautiful nature in Massachusetts. The Breakheart Reservation is partially in Saugus and spans 652 acres with lakes and trails to explore.

The most significant site in the town, by a mile, is the Saugus Iron Works Historic Site. One of the first integrated ironworks in North America, portions of this unique site have been standing since 1646. Many key sites, such as the blast furnace and forge, have been reconstructed and are still operating for tourists today.

Saugus has a thriving downtown, with many historic sites and a great dining and shopping scene. While most people stay in Boston's downtown, Saugus is a convenient location, featuring plenty of budget-friendly hotels, ideal for those looking to save money. The Holiday Inn Express Boston-Saugus is a great choice for families.

When dining in Saugus, there are a few spots that can't be missed, and there's no better way to start your day than with some sweet treats from Kane's Donuts. This popular mini-chain now has a few locations in the area. And for a truly spectacular night out, make sure to visit Kowloon, a massive Tiki restaurant that has been open for seventy-five years and offers a mix of Chinese, Thai, and Polynesian food in an environment straight from the Pacific.
